Case Study: Byford Dolphin Drilling Rig

Location: Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd. Belfast

Client: Dolphin Drilling

During a scheduled shipyard visit Sureclean was contacted by Dolphin Drilling Ltd to provide personnel and equipment to carry out cleaning of the Holland Marine MSD-II sewage treatment tanks, including the vacuum tank and existing pipework around the sewage plant.  As the project progressed the client utilised the Sureclean 3 man squad onsite to carry out additional works as per client instructions.

Sureclean Scope

Provision of a 3 man squad consisting of 1 x Supervisor, 1 x Engineer, 1 x Operative and equipment to carry out cleaning of the Holland Marine – II sewage treatment tanks.

Additional Works included:

  • Provision of personnel and equipment to carry out cleaning of the mud pits

  • Provision of personnel and equipment to carry out vacuum transfer of oily water from the moon pool area

  • Provision of personnel and equipment to carry out cleaning of the draw works
  • Provision of personnel and equipment to carry out cleaning of the overflow tank
  • Provision of personnel and equipment to carry out vacuum transfer of sewage from the accommodation toilets

Technical Challenge

When Sureclean arrived onsite it was soon established that the volume of solids within the sewage tanks proved to be greater than first anticipated when the sewage tank hatches were removed.

It was discussed with the client and agreed that Sureclean would mobilise a diesel driven vacuum unit and vacuum skips to enable the transfer of the solids for onward disposal.

To ensure that non-productive time was kept to a minimum on the day the vacuum transfer package was being mobilised to site, the client instructed Sureclean to carry out additional works. The Sureclean supervisor kept the client updated verbally and with written daily reports on progress of work carried out that day and what was intended for the following day.
